- Gabriel provides his background on his upbringing, how he became interested in privacy, and who/what inspired him on the way
- This led to starting his podcast, Watchman Privacy, and releasing his first book
- Urban’s background: came from a family that suffered under communism and had to flee; made a strong impression early
- Urban was amazed when he got his first computer early on; discovered Linux and went into cybersecurity and SysAdmin work; saw possibilities for digital freedom and started teaching people to use the most radical privacy tools possible
- Urban is also a video game enthusiast/developer — really enjoys the work from time-to-time as an expression of art
- Is the Intel Management Engine a concern to seriously worry about? Gabriel and Urban provide their thoughts
- We simply don’t know enough about the I.M.E., if it’s actually been used for surveillance or getting to somebody, etc.
- Urban provides the background into WHY these management engines (whether Intel or not) were originally put in — gives tech support the ability to repair remotely, rather than have to hardwire in
- Me: most often, it’s bad operational security that gets people into hot water, NOT vulnerabilities or backdoors in Tor, Monero, etc.
- SimpleX: potentialities, pros & cons, considerations for choosing communication protocols
- Urban: SimpleX is way too early on now to migrate people, but he’s still impressed with how much they’ve done with so little resources
- Evgeny at SimpleX works for 14+ hours a day and it’s still always a work in progress
- Monero: is the privacy set of 16 a vulnerability? Worse, is it hacked?
- Urban: absolutely not, or there would be a lot more people in jail; there are entire dark net markets run on Monero
- Urban: Samourai’s Whirlpool was unmatched — the only CoinJoin that actually breaks deterministic links; Wasabi does not, JoinMarket does not
- A lot of bitcoin considerations over the years were NOT in favor of merchant adoption — why?
- Bitcoin/monero,the Internet, and other advancing technologies are enabling radically different lifestyles than before; what are their thoughts on vonu in the modern day? I.e. country shopping, legal interstices, comments on specific lifestyles?
- Gabriel: right now, he still sees a lot of advantages in utilizing available legal interstices (such as residency in South Dakota), along with having an off-grid homestead — it’s not either/or, really
- Urban: having multiple passports is certainly advantageous; many weren’t able to leave the UK during COVID, unless they used their second passport
- The importance of having these solutions ready ahead of time, and not wait until shit really hits the fan
- Urban: most of humanity will not be “sovereign”; it’s too difficult…but you can still onboard people to solutions
- Gabriel’s closing thoughts: don’t take the privacy black pill — you can have some privacy, you can be free
